In this play by Thomas Perle, three generations of women from the same place in the Carpathian Mountains meet: mother, daughter, grandmother. Their German-Austro-Hungarian-Romanian biographies and fates play out in different languages and dialects, enmeshed in the political displacements and stories of violence throughout the centuries. With his lean, precise dialogues, the author unfolds an overarching historical narrative from the “Teutonic” migration into the region during the 18th century to National Socialism, the downfall of the Ceau?escu regime and the longing for a different life in the West. The mountains and the forest also come to speak.
